Hypertension refers to a condition when the arteries get narrowed and
the blood finds it difficult to flow through them normally. The
pressure on the artery walls increases due to this narrowing of the
blood vessels. A new born infant can also develop similar
complications. It is called PPHN or Persistence Pulmonary Hypertension
in Newborn. This disease or complication happens very rarely. Infants
with pulmonary hypertension may have serious health complications in
the long run.

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) is a rare and a
serious life-threatening condition which occurs usually in post-term or
full-term babies. PPHN is greatly characterized by the non-presence of
cyanotic congenital disease of the heart, relentless post-birth
hypoxemia and marked pulmonary hypertension. It is also found to occur
in cases where the child is not able to receive sufficient amount of
oxygen during the time of delivery.

If we look at the statistics, then women do not appear to have high
blood pressure as often and as early as men. That does not rule out the
chances of women suffering from this disease, especially after the
onset of menopause. Women need to understand the risk factors and the
implications involved.

Hypotension is a state of abnormally low blood pressure. Hypotension by
itself is not a disease, it is a physiological condition. There is a
sympathetic nervous system that regulates the blood pressure level in
human body and its effect is balanced by the autonomic nervous system.

Portal vein carries blood from the intestine to the liver. Portal
hypertension refers to the high blood pressure in this very vein. There
are two main factors responsible for the high blood pressure in the
portal veins. First factor is the greater volume of blood passing
through the blood vessels and second factor is greater resistance to
the blood while flowing through the liver.
