Treatment for low blood pressure totally
depends on the underlying cause(s) of low blood pressure. For, the
treatment methods vary from the cause to cause. Every doctor prescribes
the medication as per the need and suitability of the person's condition.
Here are some of the common causes of low blood pressure along
with the treatments preferred.
Blood loss and Septicemia.
Sometimes low blood pressure is caused by the loss of blood. This
condition can be treated with intravenous fluids and transfusions of the
blood. If the cause is septicemia, it should be treated with intravenous
fluids and antibiotics.
Dehydration. If your low blood
pressure is caused by dehydration, it ought to be treated with fluids
and minerals. If dehydration is mild and with symptoms of no nausea and
vomiting, it should be treated with oral fluids and electrolytes.
Moderate to severe dehydration requires the treatment under the
supervision of a doctor in the hospital.
Bradycardia.
Generally it results from medication. So it can be treat with the
adjustment of the dosage or discontinuing the medications.
Tachycardia.
The treatment of low blood pressure caused by the tachycardia depends on
the nature of the tachycardia. With the help of medications or with an
implantable defibrillator, ventricular tachycardia can be treated.
If
the cause of the hypotension is not clear, then you only need to do
something that can raise your blood pressure and reduce signs and
symptoms. Blood pressure can be raised in several ways:
Increased
intake of salt. Increase your intake of salt and sodium. It will
help you raise your blood pressure. But don't go beyond the limitation.
Excess sodium can cause heart failure.
Increased water. Dehydration is one of the causes of the
low blood pressure. So it is very imperative for people with low blood
pressure to drink sufficient water. Fluids increase blood volume and
thus help prevent dehydration which causes low blood pressure.
Medications. Medications are also prescribed to treat low
blood pressure. It depends on the type of the low blood pressure you are
suffering from.
If it is Neurally Mediated Hypotension, then
following medications are prescribed,
1) Fludrocortisone (Florinef)
2) Beta-blockers (e.g., atenolol)
3) Disopyramide (Norpace)
4) Fuoxetine (Prozac)
5) Sertraline (Zoloft)
6) Ephedrine
If it is the orthostatic hypotension then medications such as
fludrocortisone (Florinef), erythropoietin and midodrine are prescribed.
