High blood pressure affects around 50 million
Americans. Hypertension has been called a "silent killer". Blood
pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of your blood
vessels. Blood pressure that remains high over time is called
hypertension. Extra fluid in your body increases the amount of fluid in
your blood vessels and makes your blood pressure higher. Narrow or
clogged blood vessels also raise blood pressure. For further

What causes high blood pressure is important to know. Most cases
of chronic hypertension are "primary hypertension" but, a small
percentage are those who have "secondary hypertension" where the rise in
blood pressure is caused by another underlying condition. Blood pressure
during pregnancy is another special case. There are a number of blood
pressure medications available. Different drugs for treating
hypertension are as follows:
1) Diuretics cause the body to
excrete more sodium via urine. Some of the diuretics are amiloride,
bendroflumethiazide, chlorthalidone et al.
2) Beta-blockers are as
follows: acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, penbutolol.
3) Angiotensin
converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as benazepril, fosinopril,
quinapril, moexipril, ramipri are type of drugs to reduce blood pressure.
Some
other types of blood pressure medicine are angiotensin antagonists,
calcium channel blockers (CCBs), alpha blockers, alpha-beta blockers,
nervous system inhibitors, vasodilators, hydralazine, minoxidil
anti-hypertensive medications etc. Blood pressure measurements are
useful to administer the perfect drugs for treating hypertension. Your
immediate aim should be to have normal blood pressure, for which you
must be careful about your blood pressure measurement, and if you find
even a small rise in it, take measures prescribed for lowering high
blood pressure.
