The study was conducted by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. It studied the blood pressure levels of 35,000 people. The findings of the study revealed that people who were overweight had a higher systolic blood pressure.

On the other hand, the overall fitness had a little impact on the blood pressure level. The BMI index, which is a measure of weight versus height and influences the fitness levels did not have much effect on blood pressure. So, if you are trying to bring down your blood pressure, you should focus more on losing weight than being fit.

Several studies have often suggested obesity as one of the primary risk factors for high blood pressure. In fact, there is a direct relationship between obesity and blood pressure levels. The greater your body weight, the more your blood pressure levels are going to be. So reducing your body weight will bring down your blood pressure levels considerably.

While it is weight that has a greater impact on the blood pressure, fitness levels need not be ignored either. Once the optimum weight has been achieved, only enhanced fitness levels can help bring down the blood pressure further. So, it is only people with normal weight who can enjoy reductions in blood pressure with increased fitness levels.

Tips to lose weight and stay fit
Since both- fitness and weight influence your blood pressure, it is important that you lose weight in a healthy way. Following unhealthy weight loss measures wont prove to be of much help in the long run.

* Eat a healthy diet. Try to include more fiber in your diet. Include more of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your diet.
* Do not follow crash diets. They can lead to nutritional deficiencies and slow down your metabolism. Once you quit these diets, you will gain weight faster than you had lost it.
* Include some kind of physical activity in your daily regime. If you cannot make it to the gym each day, you can consider going for a walk. Brisk walking for 30 minutes everyday is enough to help you lose weight.

So, if you wish to lower your blood pressure, start off by reducing your body weight. Once you have achieved the optimal weight, you can then strive to achieve a higher fitness level.
