High Blood Pressure
Chemical Causes Of Hypertension
The chemical causes of hypertension are
mostly related to secondary hypertension. However, the gas nitric oxide
can be produced in the body, where it affects the smooth muscles cells
that line blood vessels. Low levels of nitric oxide have been observed
in people with high blood pressure and may be are an important factor in
essential hypertension. For further information read What
Is High Blood Pressure
In case of secondary
hypertension, the chemical causes of hypertension involve use of some
common pain relievers, including non-aspirin nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the newer COX-2 inhibitors. The
NSAIDs that may increase blood pressure include, ibuprofen (Advil,
Motrin, Rufen) and naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, Aleve). In one important
study, women who used an NSAID for five or more days a month had a
significantly higher risk for hypertension. The more often they use
them, the higher is the risk. In another study of the COX-2 inhibitors,
people who took celecoxib (Celebrex) or rofecoxib (Vioxx) experienced an
increase in blood pressure, with rofecoxib having the greater effect.
Most studies have found no significant increase in blood pressure with
aspirin (which is the most commonly used NSAID) or acetaminophen
(Tylenol).
