Supplements Heart Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is a form of arteriosclerosis. It is the term meant to describe the building up of fatty substances, calcium, cholesterol and other waste products in the inner walls of the arteries. These substances are collectively known as plaque. The consequence is that arteries become constricted and hardened over a period of time.
 
Build-up of plaque may lead to formation of scar tissue and blood clots. The result is that plaque may partially or totally obstruct the flow of blood through an artery which may lead to a heart attack or a stroke.

The result of Atherosclerosis is cardiovascular diseases, which can be fatal for people, especially those over the age of 45. Atherosclerosis is the main reason for most of the heart attacks and strokes. Atherosclerosis starts as a result of injury to the coating of the arteries.

Atherosclerosis is a sluggish and progressive ailment that may begin in childhood, though it grows quickly in later age. As the inner layers of the arteries are dented, atherosclerosis starts. There are a number of causes that ignite Atherosclerosis. Some of them are high levels of cholesterol and triglyceride in the blood, high blood pressure and cigarette smoking.

Atherosclerosis can be treated symptomatically. As a part of the treatment regimen the patient is advised to quit smoking and exercise regularly. There are number of supplements that can be taken to treat atherosclerosis. Various medications are also useful. Statins and aspirin are used for atherosclerosis-related diseases as they have antioxidant effects that reduce cardiac complications.

The various types of vitamin and nutritional supplements to treat heart atherosclerosis are described below. They are beta carotene, niacin, folic acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, calcium, magnesium and selenium. The plant form of Vitamin A is in fact Beta carotene that can decrease the probability of coronary diseases. There is also niacin that reduces the total cholesterol level. The role of folic acid is that it controls homocysteine that plays a main role in blocking the arteries. Vitamins C and E are also helpful as they protect against coronary heart diseases. Calcium is another supplement that checks the cholesterol level and prevents blood clotting.

There are supplements of selenium and coenzyme Q10, which are useful in controlling the ailment. But the most efficient approach would be an understanding of the nature of the disease and using a combination of various supplements, besides making lifestyle changes.
