Physical activity and high blood pressure are interrelated. Moderate physical activity, when practiced over a period of time can help lower blood pressure. However, there are some things that you need to know about the kind of physical activities you can indulge in when suffering from high blood pressure.

Activities to practice

Any kind of moderate physical activity is good for high blood pressure patients. However, it is aerobic exercises that offer maximum benefit. Aerobic exercises refer to the exercises that use many muscles at the same time. Some examples of aerobic exercises include walking, cycling and swimming.

These exercises cause the heart to pump blood harder, which increases the blood pressure. However, the blood flows into more number of muscles. This gives the blood much more space to flow. Thus, the blood pressure raises only marginally. Over a period of time, these exercises help bring down your blood pressure levels.

Activities to avoid
While physical activity is a must for high blood pressure patients, there are some physical activities that can do more harm than good. Here are some of them.

* Weight lifting. If you are suffering from high blood pressure or hypertension, you should never practice weight lifting without the supervision of a qualified trainer.
* Boxing. This physical exercise is extremely taxing and involves vigorous short busts of exercise, which makes it unsuitable for high blood pressure patients.
* Squash. This sport is extremely challenging and can be bad for hypertension patients.
* Scuba diving. There are some restrictions that you need to follow if you are suffering from high blood pressure. This usually depends upon the blood pressure levels and the medications in use.
* Parachuting. This activity involves a change in atmospheric pressure which can affect the blood pressure levels.
* Motor racing. Motor racing involves moving at high speed which can elevate your blood pressure levels further.

Determine the intensity
If you are suffering from high blood pressure or hypertension then you need to be careful of the intensity of your physical activities. It is important that you work at a level which is low or medium. You should never exert yourself or be extremely aggressive with any physical activity.

You can judge if you are comfortable with the given intensity of the activity by considering your breath. If you are breathing very heavily or you cannot hold a conversation when you are performing the activity, it means that you are trying too hard.

Lastly, you need to seek the advice of your health care provider as to which physical activities are suitable for you and which are not. Be physically active but make sure that you are slightly more careful.
