Causes of Low Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force that the blood exerts on arterial walls when it is being pumped through the arteries by the heart. Blood pressure is one of the signs that doctors usually check when diagnosing a patient.

There is a lot of focus on high blood pressure or hypertension because of the implications that it may have on health. Another condition, which signifies a blood pressure anomaly, is low blood pressure or hypotension.

Unlike hypertension, hypotension may not be accurately judged by measuring the blood pressure. The condition is more accurately judged by presence of the symptoms of low blood pressure such as dizziness, fatigue and chest pain. In other words, a blood pressure reading of 100/80 may not be considered as low blood pressure for one person, whereas it may for another person. The reason for this is the difference between individual constitution and state of health.

Low blood pressure may have reasons that are very different from high blood pressure and may be acute or life threatening or prolonged and chronic in nature. Low blood pressure signifies that the arteries are not able to supply sufficient blood to the various organs of the body. Acutely low blood pressure can result in multiple organ failure and death.

The reasons for low blood pressure fall under various categories.

Blood pressure may fall as a result of medication

Pregnancy may result in the falling of systolic pressure

Severe blood loss in case of a trauma or accident may result in a dramatic fall in blood pressure

Severe malnutrition or dehydration may result in loss of blood pressure

Blood pressure may fall as a secondary complication on account of a disease such as diabetes of pancreatitis

Endocrinal disorders such as an overactive or underactive thyroid may result in a fall in blood pressure

Blood pressure may fall as a result of cardiovascular problems or complications

Blood pressure may fall on account of stress, anxiety, fear and other emotional reasons.

There is a myriad of reasons that result in low blood pressure. The main difference between low and high blood pressure is that high blood pressure is primarily a lifestyle disease that needs to be managed and controlled.

In case you experience symptoms of low blood pressure then you should seek medical advice and treatment. Blood pressure is an indicator of general health and seeking medical advice helps to pre-empt any other possible health problem or condition.
