Hypertension Medicines

Hypertension is a condition in which the blood running in the vessels or capillaries exerts excessive pressure on the walls of the vessels. In other words of medical science it is called 'high blood pressure'. In hypertension the heart needs to work with more force and consistent hard work of heart makes it vulnerable to heart attack or stroke.

Hypertension is silent killer, so if you are diagnosed with positive results of it, you should immediately start taking hypertension medicines. Though most often people think of heart diseases only in relation to hypertension, yet this is not so. There are some other complications that can be caused by high blood pressure or hypertension, like atherosclerosis, kidney failures, eye damage etc. Thus, with so many complications related to hypertension, it cannot be left untreated. Why I should not take hypertension medicines self prescribed?
This is very important to note that hypertension is caused for various reasons and the medicines are specific for every cause. And, the cause of your hypertension can only be diagnosed by a doctor. The doctor after examining will decide what medicines you require. The following are the various hypertension medicines applied for various causes.

ACE inhibitors: These medicines triggers the hormone called angiotensin II, which is responsible for narrowing the blood vessels. Narrow vessels of blood increase hypertension. The medicines of this category expands the vessels and thus the blood pressure is retained to normal. Cilazapril, Captopril etc are the some names that fall under this section.

Beta-blockers: Beta blockers medicines reduce the effect of the adrenaline hormones and also block the effect of the sympathetic nervous system. This in turn relaxes the heart beats and lower the BP. Acebutolol, Bisoprolol, Atenolol etc are the medicines given in this category.

Alpha-blockers: The medicines of this kind widen and relax the blood vessels. These medicines are sometimes prescribed along with the beta blockers for more convenience.

Calcium-channel blockers: They reduce the tensions of the arteries, expand them and create more room for swift flow of the blood. They even relax the heart muscles so that the heart beats slowly and reduce hypertension. Some medicines of this category are Amlodipine, Felodipine, Diltiazem etc

Diuretics: The medicines so applied help in removing salt and fluids from the body and also reduce the strain of blood circulations. Example- Bendrofluazide, Chlorthalidone, Chlorothiazide etc.
