Hypertension Treatment

Potassium Supplements to Treat High Blood Pressure

Hypertension or high blood pressure is nicknamed as the silent killer. Loosely defined, blood pressure is the measure of the force at which blood is pumped against the inner walls of the arteries. With a constriction of the arterial walls, the heart finds it harder to  pump blood. This brings about an increase in the blood pressure. This condition is termed as hypertension or high blood pressure.

Blood pressure can be measured in two ways i.e. Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure is also measured in the same two ways i.e. Systolic and diastolic hypertension. In a normal blood pressure reading of about 140/90 mmHg, the 140 stands for the systolic blood pressure and the 90 for the diastolic blood pressure.

Hypertension symptoms are usually vague and not readily apparent. If high blood pressure is not controlled, it can damage your kidneys, heart and brain. A patient of high blood pressure person is more likely to face a heart attack or a stroke.

If you suffer from hypertension, then you need to bring about changes in diet and lifestyle in order to control this condition.  It can be quite fatal so you need to follow the treatment and preventive measures quite religiously. You should have a low fat, low cholesterol diet, reduce the consumption of salt and avoid alcohol and  caffeine completely. You also need to stop smoking. Your diet should offer you plenty of vitamins, antioxidants, fiber. Potassium supplements are also indicated and recommended to reduce blood pressure.

As proved by studies, potassium intake helps to reduce blood pressure. It can lessen blood pressure by 3.1 mmHg systolic and 2.0 mmHg diastolic. Potassium supplements are also effective against both kidney damage and stroke, two of the main likely complications of hypertension. Some medications to treat high blood pressure have a  diuretic effect. As a side effect the body tends to loose potassium. People with a low level  of potassium are at an increased risk of stroke. That is why potassium supplements for blood pressure are often recommended.

Other studies have shown that potassium can relax the constriction of blood vessels cutting the risk of high blood pressure. The mineral eliminates sodium from the blood. Less sodium means lower risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Some of the dietary sources of potassium are apple juice, avocado, apricots, legumes, beets, bananas, carrots, pears, oranges, raisins, sardines, salmon, winter squash and watermelon. You will be able to lower high blood pressure if you follow steps like lowering salt intake, increasing intake of potassium and exercising more often.

Potassium is a proven mineral for lowering blood pressure. As mentioned above, the mineral is available both from dietary sources and from supplements.  Fruit contains very high levels of potassium. It would be a good idea to consult your doctor on diet composition in case you are also taking diuretics which prevent the loss of potassium. As you increase the intake of potassium rich fruits and vegetables, you can observe significant reduction in high blood pressure within a short span of time. Thus, having a potassium rich diet can significantly reduce blood pressure in hypertensive people.
