Treatment of Stage 2 Hypertension

For the uninitiated, hypertension or high blood pressure can be defined as a medical condition  in which constrictions in arteries obstruct the flow of blood.  This leads to elevated blood pressure. As a result, the heart has to work harder to pump blood. If this situation continues, the risk of  heart disease, stroke and heart attacks can rise significantly.
Usually, blood pressure is categorized in to four categories: normal, pre-hypertension, stage 1 hypertension and stage 2 hypertension. While blood pressure reading of normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg, if it increases to 139/89 mmHg or less, it is called pre-hypertension. However, we are here concerned with Stage 2 hypertension. But to know it more clearly, we need to know Stage 1 hypertension. When the blood pressure is between 140 to 160 mmHg and 90 to 100 mmHg, it is known as Stage 1 hypertension.
Now, Stage 2 hypertension happen when the systolic blood pressure crosses 160 mmHg and the diastolic blood pressure crosses 100 mmHg. Stage 2 hypertension is a very high state of high blood pressure that needs proper and regular attention. High blood pressure affects almost 20 percent of American people. A substantial portion of this percentage  suffers from Stage 2 hypertension. The Stage 2 hypertension also affects people over the age of 55 making the treatment more complicated. 

Doctors usually,  recommend  diet and lifestyle changes for people with pre-hypertension. These changes include quitting smoking and losing weight. Other such lifestyle changes include exercising, reducing salt intake in the diet and cutting down on alcohol.

People with stage 2 hypertension  need more than lifestyle changes for their treatment. Physicians may prescribe anti-hypertensive drugs  for the treatment of Stage 2 hypertension apart from diet and lifestyle changes. These drugs are classified into categories such as diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and ACE inhibitors. These drugs primarily works to relieve the pressure on the walls and to relax the blood vessels. However, it is observed from studies that administering combinations of different drug types is usually more effective than a single drug type.
