The Recommended Diet to Avoid High Blood Pressure

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure refers to the force exerted by the blood when it is circulating through the body. It is an important criterion in determining a person’s well being and level of health. One of the first things that a physician does is to measure blood pressure as it helps in diagnosis of health problems.

The blood pressure must be under the prescribed level. It should be neither too low nor too high. High blood pressure especially when it is over a period of time is more dangerous than low blood pressure.

Diet and your blood pressure

One of the major reasons for hypertension is your diet. A faulty diet that consists of excessive amounts of cholesterol, saturated fats may lead to high blood pressure.

It is important for you to seek medical advice in case you are suffering from hypertension. Leading a healthy lifestyle, exercising and eating the right foods will definitely help you to control your blood pressure.

As a precaution, avoid consuming the following types of foods in excess

Soy sauce, mustard and ketchup with excessive amounts of sodium chloride

Canned fruits and vegetables that are soaked or preserved in salt

Corned beef and bacon

High fat dairy products

Fast foods such as pizzas and hamburgers

Wines such as Vermouth and Chianti

Fermented and smoked fish products

Powdered and liquid protein health supplements

Supplements of yeast vitamin and Brewer’s yeast

Sauerkraut, fermented bean curd and Soya bean

Coffee and other beverages containing caffeine

Chocolate

If you have high blood pressure, switch over to a diet that is high on fiber low on fat and sodium. Avoid eating canned or processed foods as these foods usually have high sodium content. Use garlic, thyme, oregano, cloves, chives and other herbs as seasoning in place of salt.

Sliced wheat, white or rye bread, dinner rolls, English muffins, brown rice and other whole grain based products are good options for a healthy diet.

Make sure that you eat poultry and lean cuts of meat instead of high fat meat products such as bacon or salted ham. Eat fatty fish such as sardines, mackerel and salmon as these are high on Omega 3 fatty acids.

Avoid eating large and heavy meals. Spread your meals over 4 to 5 times during the day and make sure you eat light and healthy.

Managing stress levels, quitting smoking and moderating your consumption of alcohol are other important steps you have to take to reduce your blood pressure.
